Old dive supervisor swore by dry gloves over wet, now I'm split after a 40 foot run in Galveston

My last supervisor, Rick, always said wet gloves are fine for anything under 50 feet and dry gloves just add bulk. I went with his advice for 2 years, but last week in Galveston harbor at 40 feet, my hands went numb after 45 minutes of valve work. Now a salvage guy I met says dry gloves are the only way below 60 and Rick was just cheaping out on gear. Who's side are you on, dry or wet for shallow winter dives?
