Just realized my basement cleanout uncovered a weird pattern in old wiring

I was stripping out old cables in my basement last weekend. Every junction box had the same odd tape job that didn't match code. Online, I found groups arguing this was done on purpose to fail inspection. Some say it was a cheap builder trick, others claim it was a deliberate scheme. The debate gets heated with people citing obscure manuals and old contractor rumors. It made me see how a simple repair job can tap into bigger hidden practice theories. Now I look at every DIY project as a potential clue.

Stumbled on the same thing in my attic last year. Every pipe joint had this weird putty that hardened wrong. Looked it up and fell into a rabbit hole of forums. People were convinced it was a shortcut to save on copper fittings. Now I second guess every repair in my old house.

I always assumed shoddy work was just laziness or lack of skill. Reading about that specific tape pattern being a known trick to fail inspection completely shifted my view. It shows a deliberate choice to cut corners that gets buried inside the walls. Now I wonder what else in my own house was done with that kind of intent.
