Took me 6 months to realize my foils were too thick this whole time

I've been doing highlights for 8 years now and always wondered why some clients would come back with a stripey, blocky grow out. Last month a client in Columbus asked me why her roots looked so harsh, and I couldn't give her a straight answer. I finally sat down and counted out my sections on a mannequin, then did a side by side with a thinner weave. Turns out I was grabbing sections nearly twice the width of what I thought I was. It took me about 45 minutes to fix my technique once I saw the difference. Has anyone else gone back to basics after years in the chair and found a simple habit was throwing off their work?

Realized the same thing two years ago when a client pointed out my weaves were chunkier than her last stylist's. I felt so dumb after all that time. It's crazy how you can get stuck in a routine and not question it. That mannequin test is a smart move, might have to steal that idea. Good on you for catching it though, most people never do.
