My dad's VHS pause button ruined action movies for me
Back in 1998 in Cleveland, my old man would freeze every explosion to point out the stuntman's shoelaces, so now I can't watch a car chase without looking for the rig cables. Has anyone else had a family member wreck a whole genre for them with their weird habit?
My uncle Gary did the same thing with the chase scene in Bullitt, paused it right when the Charger loses a hubcap and goes "see that? They had to weld the hubcaps on so they wouldn't fly off during the jump." I used to get so mad as a kid because I just wanted to watch Steve McQueen drive fast, not get a lesson in car tricks. Then I got older and started noticing stuff on my own, like how in every movie the tires squeal on dirt roads, which makes zero sense. Now when I watch a chase I'm looking at the same junk he pointed out, and honestly it makes it more fun, like a game. So yeah, the habit drove me nuts back then but it stuck with me in a good way. Your dad basically taught you a whole extra layer of the movie without meaning to.
