Spent 6 hours on a lift plan, one old timer fixed it in 20 minutes

I was setting up a 90-ton crawler for a steel beam job in Columbus and kept second-guessing the radius and pick weight. Ran the math three times, checked the chart twice, still felt off. Then a retired operator who was just hanging around the yard looked at my sketch and said 'swap the luffing jib for a fixed one, you're fighting the geometry.' He was right, it cut the whole process down and I got the beam set before lunch. Has anyone else had a simple tip from a veteran save them way more time than the books ever did?

Hated admitting it for years, but yeah, the old guys just see things the books don't cover. I used to think more time on the math meant I was being careful, then a guy who ran 4100s before I was born pointed out my pick chart was checked against the wrong boom angle. Took me a minute to realize he wasn't guessing, he'd just done this exact move so many times that the pattern was obvious. Now I bounce my plan off any retired hand hanging around the shop before I burn an afternoon. That kind of shortcut is worth more than any training class I ever sat through.
