Am I the only one who can't write a first draft without hearing my old boss's voice
I ran into my old editor Margaret at a bookstore in Portland a few weeks ago, and she reminded me that the drafts she used to hand back to me were covered in red ink, sometimes 30 marks on a single page. I used to think she was being picky, but now when I crank out messy pages I hear her saying, "just get it down, we fix it later," and it is the only reason I finish anything. Does anyone else have a person from their past who shows up in their head while they draft?
