My buddy said my short story had no 'weather' in it and now I get it
I handed my buddy Dale a 12 page short story I'd been picking at for a month, and he just wrote 'where are they?' on the top page and handed it back. Every scene was two people talking in a blank room, no windows, no sound, nothing. So now I do a pass where I only add weather and small background noise, and my current draft has a busted AC unit and a dog barking three houses down. It feels way more like a place now, and the dialog hits harder when it's not floating in nothing. Anyone got a trick like that for fixing a flat draft?
