Appreciation post: I finally hit 50,000 words on a single story draft
I always thought the whole 'word count' thing was just a number for people who like to brag online. My goal was just to finish a story, and I'd get stuck around 15k words every time. Then, about three weeks ago, I started using a simple prompt about a character who finds a key that only opens doors to places they've already been. I just kept writing, and when I checked my document this morning, the counter said 50,127. It wasn't some big, planned milestone; it just happened because the prompt gave me a weird problem to solve that kept generating more scenes. It matters because it's the first time I've written something that feels like a real, complete world instead of just a cool idea that fizzles out. I'm not even close to done, but hitting that number made me believe I could actually finish a novel-length project. Has anyone else had a prompt unlock a story that just wouldn't stop?
