My villain's motive fell apart 4,000 words into my draft
I was writing a short story for a local contest in Portland with a 5,000 word cap, and around word 4,000 I realized my villain's whole reason for being evil made zero sense once I actually thought about his childhood. I sat there for two hours trying to patch it, then finally wrote his backstory from scratch as a one page journal entry in his own voice. Turns out he did not want revenge at all, he just wanted someone to admit they were wrong. Has anyone else had a prompt or draft fall apart that late and salvaged it, or do you just start over?
