Warning: my old writing teacher in Fresno said to kill every adverb, and it wrecked my prompts for a month
She handed back my prompt sheet with 14 adverbs circled in red and said "the verb should do the work alone." Now my prompts read flat and stiff, so how do you all keep voice in a prompt without leaning on -ly words?
Had a guitar teacher once who told me to stop using a pick for a whole month, said my fingers should carry the rhythm alone. Played everything with just my thumb and it sounded like a wet paper bag for weeks. Then when I picked it back up, something clicked and my strumming got way looser. Sometimes the rule is just a tool to shake you up, not a law you keep forever.
