The guy ahead of me at the coffee shop in Portland paid with a 20 and a pocket knife
Standing in line at a spot on Division last Tuesday, the dude in front of me pulled out this tiny folder to cut a loose thread off his sleeve while waiting, then used the same knife to open the register tip jar lid for the barista when it jammed. He did it without making a thing of it, just handed the knife over, she popped the lid, handed it back, done. I have carried a small folder on and off for two years mostly for boxes and tags, but seeing someone use one as a plain everyday tool, not a showpiece, made me realize mine rides in my bag instead of my pocket half the time. How do you all decide what actually goes in your pocket versus what stays in the bag?
Man, who cares if it rides in your bag half the time, that just means you actually have a system that works instead of losing the thing or stabbing yourself digging for keys. Most people carrying a knife in their pocket every single day are just doing it for the look anyway, and the ones who actually need it can grab it from a bag in two seconds. Pocket vs bag is not some big life choice, it is just where the tool happens to sit when you are not using it.
