Morning sketchbook habit looks nothing like my old routine
Back in my twenties I'd sit for two hours with a photo and a 4B pencil, erasing every mistake until it was perfect, and usually it still came out stiff. Now i do fifteen minutes with a pen at coffee, no eraser allowed, and I've filled three little notebooks since March with faces and plants that actually have some life in them. Has anyone else found that slowing down made their doodles worse, or did you also get better by rushing on purpose?
Has the pen thing been what changed it for you, or is it more about just not giving yourself time to overthink? I went through something similar with my sketching. I used to obsess over getting the shading perfect and would end up with these lifeless drawings. Now I set a timer on my phone and just let the lines go wherever they want, and honestly it feels way more like playing than working.
