Vent: My 3D printer jammed on day 2 of a 40-hour print, but the salvage fix worked. Debating if backups are worth it

So Tuesday I started a big print for a client, a custom lamp shade, 40 hours total. At hour 12 the filament snapped mid-layer and the nozzle kept dragging, ruining about 8 hours of work. I was furious. But then I stopped, clipped the mess, re-leveled the bed, and spliced the model into two halves at the break point. Printed the top half separately and glued them. It worked, barely, and the seam is hidden behind the shade's curve. Now here's the thing: I could have avoided this with a filament runout sensor, which my printer doesn't have. I've been eyeing a $35 upgrade kit. But my buddy swears sensors cause more false stops than they prevent, especially with cheap filament. Has anyone else dealt with a failed long print and fixed it on the fly? Do you think the sensor is a real safety net or just another thing to troubleshoot? I'm leaning toward getting one anyway, but I'd love to hear if you've had more luck with or without it.

I used to think runout sensors were a waste of money, mostly cause my buddy had the same opinion as yours. Then I had a 30 hour print fail at hour 26 and had to redo the whole thing from scratch. That one fail cost me more in filament and time than the sensor would have. Yeah, cheap filament can cause false triggers sometimes, but you can tune the sensitivity or just use better filament. Honestly, having a sensor that stops the print is way better than waking up to a ruined layer stack and a dead nozzle. I say grab the kit, its $35 and one saved print pays for it ten times over.
