Air dryer purge every 5k? I fought it for a decade before changing my tune

Used to think servicing the air dryer on my Freightliner was a scam, just another upsell at the shop in Tulsa. Ran 80k miles with the original cartridge and never had a wet tank issue, so I figured why bother. Last fall I finally swapped it out and the difference in drain valve discharge was night and day, mostly clean air versus that chalky oil sludge that used to come out. Watching the old cartridge pour rusty grit convinced me it was doing way more work than I gave it credit for. Anyone else ran one too long and regretted it, or had the opposite luck?
