My art teacher in 2009 told me to stop using the smudge tool and I ignored her for a decade
Back in my community college digital art class in Sacramento, my teacher pulled me aside after critique and said the smudge tool was making all my shading look like muddy peanut butter. I kept using it anyway because it felt like painting with my fingers and I liked that. Ten years later I pulled up my old folders and she was totally right, every piece had this greasy blur over it that hid all my line work. These days I block in color with a hard round brush and only soften edges where light actually wraps around a form. Curious if anyone else got a critique back then that only made sense to them way later?
