One artist's comment at a gallery opening stuck with me for months

Back in March at the Spring Arts Showcase here in Portland, this older digital painter looked at my big fantasy landscape piece and said 'your shadows are hiding from the light.' I thought it was a weird compliment, but then I realized he meant I was playing it too safe with my contrast. Ive reworked that piece twice since, and now I push my darks way harder. Has anyone else gotten feedback that took forever to actually make sense?

My buddy Mark kept painting the same bridge for two years before someone told him his water looked like glass, and now it actually ripples.
