The 2 AM scanner setting that fixed my art show entry

Last month I was about to submit to the annual digital showcase in Portland and my piece looked like garbage on screen, too dark and muddy. I tried adjusting my tablet brightness for an hour until I thought, what if I scan my pencil sketch at 600 dpi with the 'descreen' filter on, then layer it in? It totally lifted the line work and brought out this soft texture I didn't even know was there. Has anyone else had a random scanner button save their piece when all the usual editing failed?
