The color picker swatch trick that cut my proof rounds in half

I kept sending clients previews that looked fine on my monitor but came back with notes about the tones being off. After 3 months of this, I started pulling the exact hex values from my piece and placing them on a neutral gray background before exporting the showcase file. That simple swatch test caught about 40% of my color mismatches right away. Has anyone else used a similar method, or do you rely on calibrated screens instead?
