I picked cartridge bearings over loose ball and I'm not sorry
After 3 hub rebuilds in 2 seasons on my old commuter, I got tired of the gritty feel every time it rained. Everyone in my group ride swore by loose ball cones with good grease, said they last forever if you set them right. I went with sealed cartridge bearings anyway, spent $28 on a pair of hubs from a local shop in Portland. That was 14 months ago, zero adjustment, zero noise, wheels still spin smooth. Maybe I got lucky or maybe my riding style is just hard on cones, but I'd take the swap over another Saturday with cone wrenches any day. Has anyone else made the jump and gone back the other way?

Got a buddy who rebuilt his cartridge hubs three times in one winter. Went back to loose ball. Weirdo.
