That guy at the trailhead fixed my chain with a zip tie

I was about 4 miles from the parking lot on a gravel loop near Boise last Sunday and my rear derailleur snapped clean off the hanger. I had no spare parts, just a multi-tool and some electrical tape. This older rider pulled up, said 'got a zip tie?' and didn't even wait for my answer. He threaded one through the derailleur cage and around the frame to hold the jockey wheels in line, then told me to shift to the smallest cog and pedal easy. I made it back without touching the hills, just spun on the flats. That trick probably saved me a 2 hour walk pushing a 30 pound bike. Has anyone else got a trailside hack that got them home without a tow?
