I thought my neighbor's bottle tree was tacky until I heard her reason for it
For two years I walked past the dead cedar in her yard that had about 30 blue glass bottles hanging off the branches and I figured it was just junk someone saw on a home show. Then she had a few of us over for coffee and mentioned her grandmother in Beaumont kept one to catch bad spirits, and the blue was supposed to mean peace for whoever lived there. I started looking into it and people have been doing this in the South for a long time, sometimes with 12 to 15 bottles and sometimes a whole tree full. Last weekend I found a bare branch off my old pear tree and wired up 9 bottles I got for a dollar each at the flea market. It looks a little silly from the street but I like knowing there is a story behind it. Does anyone here hang anything besides bottles, like old keys or tin cans, and how do you keep the wire from cutting into wet wood?
