Blew $70 on a tap and die set from a flea market in Mesa and every single die was dull
Tried to chase the threads on a stripped bolt for my bike rack project and the tap just smeared the metal instead of cutting it. Has anyone had luck sharpening cheap taps or should I just eat the cost and buy singles when I need them?
Congrats on basically buying a $70 paperweight collection. I once sharpened a cheap tap with a diamond file and it cut about one and a half threads before giving up on life, so that route is mostly a waste of time. Flea market tools are usually sold by guys who know exactly why they're selling them. The dies were probably dull when they left the factory in 1987. My advice is buy singles from a real store when a project needs them, since a $6 tap that works beats a bucket of ones that don't.
