DAE try WD-40 to fix a squeaky cabinet hinge and end up with a worse noise?

I sprayed my kitchen cabinet hinges with WD-40 at 11pm thinking it would quiet them down, but by morning the squeak was joined by a weird grinding sound that wasn't there before, so now I'm wondering if I should have just tightened the screws instead.
