Tried to fix a squeaky stair at 11pm and it turned into a 5-hour nightmare
Pulled up the tread thinking it was one loose board, but found 3 cracked joists hiding underneath that I had to sister up with scrap 2x6s from the garage. Has anyone else opened up one "quick" repair and found a whole mess waiting for you?

Sistering with 2x6s helps for sure but code usually wants the repair lumber to match the depth of the joist you're fixing, so keep an eye on that. Cracked joists under a stair tread are rarely a one board problem once you start poking around.
