Old mesh I almost tossed ended up being my best friend

I pulled out a screen from 2019 last week, the mesh had a small tear in the corner so I figured it was dead for good. Instead of throwing it away, I taped off the tear with some packing tape and tried a simple one-color print on an old tote bag. That thing laid down ink more evenly than any of my newer screens, maybe because the tension settled over time or the emulsion just aged right. I got 40 clean pulls from it before the tape started lifting, not bad for a screen I was ready to trash. Now I keep a few old busted screens around just for practice runs and quick tests, saves my good ones for customer work. Anyone else got a beat-up tool that somehow works better than the new stuff?

That line about the tension settling over time really hit me. I got an old beat to hell trowel from my grandpa that's got a bent handle and looks like garbage, but it floats over a fresh skim coat better than any new one I've bought. It's like the tool learns the job after enough years of abuse. I know exactly what you mean about saving the good stuff for paying customers, but these old friends always seem to come through when you least expect it. The tape trick is smart too, I'm gonna remember that for my own torn screens. There's something calming about using gear that's already got scars, no pressure to keep it perfect.
