Caught a busted rebar detail 2 hours before a pour in Reno, do you flag it to the GC or fix it yourself?
I was doing shop drawings for a 4-story hotel in Reno and right before sending sheets out I caught a rebar detail where the lap splice at a column base was 8 inches short of what the engineer specced. I flagged it to the GC and he said just fix it on the drawing, but the structural engineer on record was out for a week at a conference in Phoenix. I ended up marking it up with a red cloud and sending it straight to the EOR anyway, and he called me back the next morning agreeing it needed a fix. Two draftsmen here argue about this all the time: do you go around the GC to the engineer, or do you trust the chain and wait? What's your rule when the deadline is 48 hours out and nobody's picking up the phone?
