That $300 'heavy duty' cutter head was a total waste

I bought a fancy cutter head attachment off a supplier in Baton Rouge, thinking it would chew through the debris we pull out of the Mississippi silt. Spent $300 on it plus shipping, and it jammed on our third day of use when we hit a tangle of old fishing line and root mats. Took my crew 4 hours to disassemble and clear it, and the replacement parts cost another $120. My old standard head never gave me that kind of grief, even after 9 years of use. Anyone else burn cash on upgraded gear that just made things worse on the water?

Funny how that works, the old beat-up heads just keep going while the fancy ones fail the first time they meet real junk. I had the same thing happen with a supposedly upgraded dredge cutter, and the fix ended up being buying the cheapest standard replacement I could find. Those high-dollar parts are made for clean sand, not the nasty mix of fishing line and roots you actually pull out of the river.
