Basement ceiling paint job surprised me after 11 months

I finally painted the exposed joists and ductwork in my Leduc basement flat black, expecting it to hide all the wiring and pipes. But now the ceiling feels lower and I notice every single seam and cobweb, it's like the black makes imperfections pop instead of vanish. Has anyone else had this happen, or did I just pick the wrong finish for a low ceiling?
