Why does nobody talk about troubleshooting a phantom voltage on a 3-way switch circuit that took me 4 hours to trace back to a shared neutral in the attic crawlspace?

I'm torn between thinking this is just part of the job's detective work and feeling like basic residential wiring should have clearer diagrams, so what's your take on the most common time-waster you've hit?

Was it a DIY job or a pro install that messed up the neutral?

Hold your horses a bit, @alicea26. Sometimes DIY gets a bad rap when a pro job can be just as messy. My uncle's fancy electrician charged a fortune to replace a light fixture and managed to leave a loose neutral that caused flickering for months. Meanwhile, I've seen plenty of weekend warriors do careful work with a simple voltage tester and get everything solid the first time. The real disaster isn't always who did it, but whether they bothered to double check the wiring before flipping the breaker back on.
