I finally cleared out my garage after 8 years and the space is unreal now
My garage was basically a storage unit for boxes and old furniture since we moved in. Last month I spent a weekend just hauling stuff to the dump and donating the rest. The before and after is crazy, I went from barely being able to walk through it to having a whole empty bay. I'm thinking about putting in some basic shelving and maybe a workbench. Has anyone done a simple setup like that on a tight budget, like under $500?

That empty bay is a fantastic opportunity. For a tight budget, skip the big box store kits and look for used industrial shelving from restaurant supply auctions or Craigslist. A solid core door from a habitat restore makes a perfect, cheap workbench top if you mount it on some simple 2x4 legs. The key is spending most of your budget on good lighting first, it makes any basic setup feel more functional.

Clearing out a space like that is such a good feeling. I once helped a neighbor do the same with his shed, and we found a whole set of old kitchen cabinets he ended up using for storage. @willow244 has the right idea about looking for used stuff, it's amazing what people are getting rid of. That neighbor just screwed those cabinets right to the wall and had instant, solid shelving for almost nothing. A good sweep and some bright lights made it look like a whole new room.
