Showerthought: Why do people insist on putting carpet OVER hardwood in kitchen renos?

Whoa wait @dixon.ryan you're telling me people actually put carpet in a KITCHEN? Like where you cook and drop stuff and spill things? I thought that was just a myth or something people joked about. There's no way anyone thought that was a good idea unless they literally hated themselves. The grease stains alone must have been insane, not to mention whatever weird stuff gets trapped in there over the years. Honestly that sounds like a nightmare you uncovered.

Found out GPT-4 uses like 8,000 GPUs to train and my jaw dropped

Holy crap, 8,000 GPUs? That's insane.

Why does nobody talk about how many fridge compressors fail right after the 3-year warranty ends?

Man, you guys are making me feel like I've been living under a rock. I used to think it was just bad luck or a bad batch of parts, like when your phone battery dies after two years. But reading about those thermal overload protectors being basically a planned failure point, that clicks. I had a buddy who replaced his whole fridge just because the compressor "died" and the repair quote was more than a new unit. Now I'm wondering how many of those were actually just a $5 part that could have been swapped out if the companies wanted to make them serviceable. You really think the data on those 37-40 month failures is that consistent across brands?

Dropped $150 on a fancy voltage tester that nearly got me killed

whoa hold on 277 volts?? that's wild. i thought those Fluke T6s were supposed to be the gold standard for that kind of stuff especially for the price. i've heard of cheap meters giving false readings but not a $150 Fluke. glad you double checked man that could've been nasty. makes me wonder how many people trust those things completely and end up in a bad spot.

My buddy swore by booking flights on Tuesday at 2 AM. Total myth.

Dave told me the same garbage years ago about Southwest releasing their "secret inventory" at 3 AM on Wednesdays. I set three alarms and woke up to a price that was literally $47 more than what I saw at noon. The whole thing is a joke airlines love to keep alive so people like us feel smart for staying up late. Honestly the only real trick is booking out exactly 6 to 8 weeks in advance for domestic flights, everything else is just noise. Your Austin to Denver story is EXACTLY why I stopped listening to anyone who says they "cracked the code" on airline pricing. Now I just compare prices on Google Flights over a few days and grab whatever looks reasonable.
