inMy estimate accuracy went from 60% to 90% in one month after I started measuring twice
Oh man, I feel this hard. I'd suggest trying a roll width check before you even get to the room layout. Like, if you're using 12 foot carpet, measure the room's width first and see if you can run it the short way to avoid seaming. I also started snapping a quick photo of the room from each corner on my phone and drawing rough dimensions on it in my photo editor before I leave. It's saved me from coming back for a remeasure at least five times this year. The laser measurer is a game changer too, just make sure you're holding it level or it'll screw you.

inGuy at the shop tried telling me chip thinning was a myth
Oh man, that's frustrating but honestly it's like this everywhere, not just in machining. I've noticed this pattern in all kinds of trades. People get comfortable with doing something a certain way for a long time and they start thinking anything new is just a waste of time. It's like that guy who insists on using a butter knife to open a paint can because "that's how my dad did it and it worked fine." There's no convincing them that a proper tool might make the job easier or give better results. Your guy's been running that Bridgeport for 15 years so in his head, he's seen it all and chip thinning is just some book learning that doesn't apply to real world work. Take it with a grain of salt though, some old school guys are worth listening to on other stuff, just not this.

inNoticed how smooth my crane boom extension went after I switched from grease to dry lube on the sliding pads
Wait, you had a Liebherr LTM 1050 and you were fighting with grease on the sliding pads? I would have never guessed that was a thing. I always figured grease was just the standard for everything on those big cranes. That's wild to me that dry lube made that big of a difference. Like, 5 minutes instead of 20 is a huge jump. I mean, I've seen guys at the rental yard cuss at sticky sections for ages and nobody ever thought to try something else. Almost sounds too good to be true, you know?

inRemember when Amazon reviews actually told you if a product was good?
OH please, I actually PREFER the short reviews! Who has TIME to read a novel about a desk lamp when I can scroll through 50 people saying "works great" in under a minute and know it's probably fine?

inWarning: that "free VPN" extension might be tracking you
Yeah I used to think free meant safe. Learned that one the hard way too.
