inThat cheap moisture meter I laughed at actually caught a leak
That little $12 pinless meter from Harbor Freight caught a leak for me in a bathroom I would have never found otherwise... I was checking a shower pan and it kept giving weird readings near the corner, so I poked around more and sure enough, there was a slow drip behind the tile that had just started softening the drywall on the other side. The guy who owned the house had installed it himself and thought it was bulletproof, but that cheap little thing saved me from missing a huge insurance claim down the road. I still use it all the time now, even though I bought a nicer one later... sometimes the simple stuff just works better for spot checks. It made me stop being such a snob about tools honestly, because a $30 meter that finds a real problem is worth more than a $300 one that sits in the truck.

inHad to pick between a pole pruner and a handsaw for clearing backyard oaks
Man, you nailed it. I used to be one of those guys who grabbed the power tools first every time. A few years ago I probably wouldve laughed at someone suggesting a handsaw over a pole pruner. But after enough jams and messed up cuts I started to see things different. Now I keep a folding handsaw in my truck for most tight jobs and only pull out the power stuff when I really need the speed. @perry.jessica you hit the nail on the head about control coming from feeling the cut. There's no substitute for knowing exactly where your blade is and what its doing. I still use power tools plenty but I stopped pretending theyre always better.

inWhy does nobody talk about how hard it is to find wheelchair-friendly sidewalks in older neighborhoods?
That van blocking the ramp on Maple Street is exactly the kind of thoughtlessness @wade780 nailed. I counted five driveways on my block last week where cars were parked right over the curb cut, making it useless for anyone in a chair. It shows how little people who don't use mobility aids notice the basic stuff that keeps us safe moving around.

inMy dad started out watching me and said I was fighting the carpet instead of laying it
That knee kicker tip is gold, my dad taught me the same trick with the half tension first pass and it saved my back too. The old timers always have those little details that just make sense once you try em.

inWhy does nobody talk about how bad the 'just apply to everything' advice is?
Stuck to maybe 10 jobs a week that actually fit my skills and got way better responses than blasting out apps. @norag38 is right about the algorithm thing, seen it happen to friends.
