Asked 3 agencies for a logo, the $600 one won on research alone
I run a small landscaping business outside Tucson and needed a new logo. Got quotes from three local agencies. One at $1,200, one at $600, and one freelancer at $250. The $600 agency spent 40 minutes asking about my customers, my truck wrap colors, even where I park for job sites. The others just asked for my business name and favorite colors. The $600 result got me two new commercial contracts in the first month because it actually looked like the crews I send out. The fancy $1,200 one looked like a generic lawn sign. Would you pay more for research time or just for the pretty picture? Has anyone else seen this gap between price and prep work?
Man, this hits close to home because I read a whole thread about this on a design forum a while back. The gist was that clients keep paying for how a logo looks when they should be paying for whether it fits who they actually are. One designer in that thread said the research part is really the whole job and the drawing part is like 20 percent of it. That stuck with me because it makes total sense with what you saw. The $1,200 shop probably just has fancier software and a nicer website, but fancy tools don't tell them anything about your crews or your trucks. The gap you're talking about is real, price and prep work are not the same thing at all. Sounds like the $600 place just did the actual work and that's why it paid off for you.
