Serious question, did I waste 2 years fine tuning prompts when the model just needed one clear example?
I spent about 20 hours a week tweaking prompts for a support bot at my job in Austin, stacking rule after rule like I was writing a legal contract. Last Tuesday a coworker glanced at my 600 word prompt and said "why not just paste in one good example of the answer you want?" I tried it and the output got cleaner in a single pass, fewer weird caveats, better tone. Now I think half the prompt engineering tips floating around are just people patching bad instructions with more instructions. Has anyone else found that one solid example beats a wall of rules, or is it just my use case?
