Bought a cheap wire tracer from a trade show and it cost me a whole day

I spent $80 on this thing that looked good in the booth, but the signal bled everywhere on a retrofit job. I spent 6 hours chasing ghosts in the walls before I gave up and used my old method. That's a full day's pay gone because I tried to save a few bucks. Anyone got a wire tracer they actually trust for old plaster walls?

Had a similar thing happen with a cheap stud finder. Bought one from a big box store for a quick drywall patch. It kept beeping over nothing but air. Ended up putting three extra holes in the wall like an idiot. Sometimes the old ways are just better, you know? I feel your pain on wasting a whole day.

Ugh, that "chasing ghosts in the walls" line is too real lol. What was your old method that you went back to? I'm wondering if the plaster and lathe just messes with the signal so bad that nothing electronic works right.

Yeah, plaster and lathe is the worst. I mean, my grandpa used to just knock on the wall and listen for the change in sound. Idk if it actually worked but he swore by it.
