Question about a manager in Phoenix who told me to never ask for a raise

At a team lunch last month, my boss said asking for more money makes you look greedy and hurts your chances... but I got a 10% raise by showing my sales numbers and asking directly. Has anyone else been told to just wait and see what happens?

I finally got a 1978 Nikon F2 back from a customer who tried to fix it himself.

He told me 'I just needed the right screwdriver.' The whole shutter assembly was a mess, with parts from a different camera forced in. How do you guys handle explaining why DIY fixes can go so wrong without sounding rude?

I dropped about $80 on a proper comic book press and it was a game changer for my old collection

I had a bunch of books from the 80s and 90s that were in decent shape but had that annoying spine roll and wavy pages from being stored in a damp basement years ago. I tried the old 'put them under heavy books' trick for months and it barely did anything. Finally, I bit the bullet and bought a basic press board set from a comic supply site. After pressing a few books for a week under the right pressure, they looked so much flatter and cleaner. It honestly made some of my mid-grade books look a full grade better, which was a huge win for display. I know it's not a professional grading service press, but for a fan just wanting their personal collection to look nice, it was totally worth it. Has anyone else tried a DIY press on books they never plan to sell?

Shoutout to my cousin's kid who called my code 'boring'

I was showing my first Python script to my 10-year-old niece, and she just stared at it for a second and said, 'It's just words... where's the game?'... I'd been so focused on getting the syntax right that I forgot to make anything fun. That one comment made me drop my tutorial and start building a simple number guessing game instead. Has anyone else had a kid totally reframe why they're learning to code?

That new apartment complex on 5th Street has me questioning our standard coax runs

I was out there last week for a pre-wire, and every unit has a media panel in a closet, but the runs to the living room wall plates are all over 50 feet. Everyone says to just use RG6 and it's fine, but with that length and the potential for future high-bandwidth stuff, I think we should be pushing for RG11 on the main feed at least. Has anyone else run into a setup like this and argued for a better spec?

I finally figured out why my old Game Boy Camera pictures looked so bad

For months, I thought my Game Boy Camera was just low quality. Then my friend Mike pointed out I was using the wrong kind of light. He said, 'You need bright, direct light, not a lamp in a dark room.' I tried taking a picture outside at noon and the difference was huge. Has anyone else found tricks to get better images from these old digital cameras?

My habit tracker hit 365 days straight and I didn't even notice until yesterday

I have a simple two-line tracker in my weekly spread for drinking enough water and doing a quick 10 minute tidy up. I just mark a tiny dot for each day I do them. I was setting up my new journal for next month and flipped back through the old one to copy some yearly info. That's when I saw it. Every single day for a full year had two dots. I actually had to count them twice because I was sure I'd missed a sick day or a busy weekend. It mattered because those two small habits have made a huge difference in how I feel, but in my head I still thought of myself as someone who was bad at keeping routines. The physical proof right there in dots of Pilot G2 ink was a real shock. Has anyone else had a tracker show them something they didn't expect about themselves?

Warning: I thought dry aging at home was a waste of time and space.

For years, I told customers to leave it to the pros. Then my buddy, who runs a small farm, gave me a whole rib section and dared me to try it. I set up a mini fridge with a small fan and a salt block, aiming for 28 days. The cost to run it was maybe $15 extra on the power bill. The transformation was insane. The flavor was so deep and nutty, nothing like the wet-aged stuff I usually sell. It convinced me there's a real market for small-batch, properly aged cuts if you control the environment. What's the longest you've successfully dry-aged something in a home setup without losing too much yield?

My cordless nailer's battery crapped out mid-job on a deck in Phoenix last Thursday.

I mean, it was 108 degrees and I had to finish the railings by hand, which sucked, but maybe it's just me or does the heat murder those lithium packs faster than they say?

I was sure that new coolant additive was just snake oil

I mean, the shop got a free sample of this stuff called 'EdgeKeeper' last month and I rolled my eyes. But my boss made me try it on a long run of 4140 steel parts. After three days, the tool life on our roughing end mill went up by almost 20%. I'm still a bit shocked. Has anyone else had a coolant or lube thing actually work that well?
