Why I stopped putting motion sensors right above the thermostat
I keep running into this on service calls around Dayton, and it has cost me two callbacks in the past 3 months. Guys are mounting PIR sensors a foot or two above the thermostat because the wire is already there, but the supply vent blows warm air up that wall and fouls the sensor. I proved it with a cheap IR thermometer: the wall read 68 degrees, and the spot above the vent read 79 while the heat cycled. If you have to share that wall, put the sensor on the opposite side of the room away from any vent, or you will be back for free. Anyone else get burned by this on a job?
Man I feel this one, had the same deal on a job in Kettering last winter and the sensor kept reading that warm air pocket. What fixed it for me was moving the sensor to an interior wall across the room and it read true ever since, no more free trips back. That supply vent wall is just a bad spot no matter how easy the wire is.
