Fixed quote vs hourly rate for farm shop builds?

Owner in Lethbridge wanted a flat price on a 40x60 shop. I pushed for time and materials. Quote was 8k higher, but hit 3 surprises with the slab and trusses. He was mad upfront, happy at the end. Which way do you guys bid rural work?

Yep, done the same thing, fixed quotes always bite you on rural jobs.
