Rebuilding a deck in Lethbridge took 3 weekends because of one stupid rim joist
Hired a guy out of Lethbridge to help me rebuild my back deck and we figured it was a two weekend job, tops. Turned out the rim joist against the house was rotted through in a spot we couldn't see, so we had to pull siding, sister in new lumber, and reframe the whole west corner. We lost probably 14 hours just on that one section because the old fir was so dried out every screw stripped and we snapped two drill bits. At $85 an hour for his time that corner alone cost me close to $1,200 extra. Anybody else run into hidden rot that blew up a simple deck job, and how did you handle the extra cost with the homeowner?
