That $800 concrete quote in Red Deer was a scam, my foreman saw it coming

Last month I got a quote from a guy who said he'd pour a 12x14 pad for my shop. $800 flat, cash only, said he could start the next day. My foreman who's been doing this 25 years told me to run. He said anyone that cheap either skimps on rebar or pours too thin. I called him out on the rebar, he got weird and stopped answering. Then I had to pay $2,400 to a legit crew out of Sylvan Lake. Has anyone else gotten quotes that were too good to be true? How do you spot these guys before you lose a deposit?
