Leveler lied to me and my laundry room floor fought back
I spent 5 days last month retiling my laundry room in Nob Hill and it was a complete disaster because I skimped on self leveling compound. The bag said it flows out flat but I got lazy and didn't use a gauge rake, ended up with a low corner that made the last row of tile pop up like a seesaw. My neighbor who does concrete work came by and just pointed at the bubble and said 'you know you can't fix that with more thinset, right?' So I had to tear out 80 square feet and start over, wasted about $200 in materials and a whole weekend. By the time I finished the second pass it was flat enough but my back was shot for a week. Anyone else get burned by trusting those leveler claims or is it just me? What do you use to check floors before tile goes down?

Buddy, reading this felt like looking in a mirror, except my mirror also mocks me. I did the same thing in my bathroom last year, trusted the bag that said self leveling like it was a promise from a best friend, and ended up with a dip so bad the tile looked like it was doing the wave. Spent a whole Saturday on my knees with a chisel, and my back filed a formal complaint. A good straight edge and a cheap laser level are what I use now before anything goes down, plus I always mix a bit extra so I can hit the low spots twice. Lesson learned the hard way, those bags lie like a cheap scale. Six bags of regret later, I keep a 4 foot level within arm's reach at all times.
