Update: the guy at the tile shop on San Mateo talked me out of the $85 thinset and I keep thinking about it
Stopped in for a bag of modified thinset for my bathroom floor last Saturday and the older guy behind the counter asked what I was laying it over, and when I said concrete slab he pointed me to a $27 bag instead, saying the fancy stuff only matters over plywood or backer board and I was about to pay triple for nothing.
That guy did you a real solid. Concrete has no flex to it and it pulls moisture from the slab, which is the opposite of what plywood does. On a slab the cheap stuff grabs fine because you are not fighting any movement underneath. Fancy thinset is mostly about sticking to wood that swells and shrinks with the seasons.
