Does a 5 dollar socket adapter really beat a 90 dollar torque wrench on a Whirlpool drum bolt?

I was in a supply house in Tucson last Tuesday and heard two guys going at it. One said he just torques drum bolts with a breaker bar and a cheap adapter, never had a callback in 10 years. The other said every Whirlpool spec is there for a reason and you are an idiot if you skip the click. I grew up learning on old Maytags where you just cranked it until it felt right, but I also saw a stripped bolt on a 2022 model ruin a whole afternoon. Are we over relying on torque specs for laundry machines, or is it just lazy to eyeball it? Who here actually uses a torque wrench on every drum bolt and who frees hands it after the 3rd identical machine?

Shook my head reading that first guy's take... a breaker bar on a modern Whirlpool drum bolt? Those 2022 and newer models have that softer aluminum hub, I've seen it. One slip and you're not just stripping threads, you're pulling the whole spider assembly apart. I use my torque wrench on every single one, not because I'm some purist, but because that 15 minutes of extra care beats a 3 hour tear down on a Tuesday. Ten years without a callback is luck, not skill.
