Factory reset vs. full board swap, which one actually holds?

I've got a washing machine from 2019 in Austin that kept throwing the same F21 code every 4th cycle. I tried the factory reset twice, cleared the drain pump filter, and even swapped the pressure sensor, but the error came right back after a week. Finally I just ordered a new control board for $140 and it has been solid for 2 months now, so is there any real scenario where a reset fixes a persistent fault, or are we just delaying the inevitable? What's your rule of thumb?

$140 for a board when a $20 reset button woulda done it, huh?

Used to think $20 fixes were always the answer too. But after chasing a ghost issue for three days, I get why someone would just swap the whole board. @charles_knight you're right that it's overkill, but sometimes peace of mind costs extra.
