Serious question, has anyone else found those cheap multimeter test leads to be okay?

For a long time I thought you had to buy the expensive ones or they would give bad readings. Then my good set got left on a job in Daytona, so I grabbed a $15 pair from the auto parts store just to finish the day. I've been using them for about three months now on everything from checking thermistors to verifying 240v at outlets, and they've been totally fine. Am I just getting lucky, or are some of us too picky about our leads?

Wait, you mean the expensive ones aren't just for looking cool in your tool bag? Honestly, I've had a cheap pair for years that only failed when I let the magic smoke out of the meter itself.

Is it weird how we all have that one cheap thing we swear by until it finally gives up on us? I mean, sometimes the expensive stuff just has better safety features or lasts longer, but it's not always worth the extra cash.

So what exactly let the magic smoke out?
