My neighbor Carol changed how I think about accessible housing

Carol got me thinking too. My aunt uses a wheelchair and she always complains about how hard it is to find a bathroom she can actually use. The grab bars thing is huge, but so is the sink height and the mirror angle. It's like nobody designing these places has ever had to use them. I'm just so tired of seeing one type of access get all the attention while others get left out completely.

Chose a password manager over a notebook after my wallet got stolen in Chicago

And here's another thing nobody really brings up. If someone steals that notebook, they don't just have your passwords. They've got your whole digital life in one physical spot. Lost mine at a coffee shop once, took me three days of panic to realize I had to change everything, not just the stuff I remembered writing down.

Old Otis vs new lifts - night and day difference

Different tech has different tradeoffs, for sure. Newer stuff can have way more features and be easier to fix if something goes wrong. But I've also had old Otis elevators that ran smooth and quiet for decades with just basic maintenance. The newer ones sometimes have a ton of sensors and software that cause needless headaches when they glitch. Your mileage may vary, but I think a lot of it comes down to who installed it and how well they maintain it. A well-kept older system can still win over a poorly set up shiny new one, in my experience.

Had a big maple come down wrong last spring and it changed how I rig loads

Oh man, I get it, @betht32, and you're probably right. I'm the kind of person who'd try to eyeball a gutter job and end up with a crooked mess that leaks worse than before. If I had a dollar for every time I thought "I got this" and then immediately proved myself wrong, I'd have enough to pay for that workshop twice over. Honestly, my patience runs out about the same time my common sense does, usually right when I'm halfway up a ladder. So maybe it's less about the physics and more about me needing a class on not being a doofus.
