Why does everyone skip the drain pan on a Whirlpool front loader?

Pulled a washer out of a rental in Mesa last Thursday and the drain pan was so packed with lint and coins that the pump had been dead for who knows how long. I keep seeing guys swap the pump and call it a day without ever pulling that pan, then the new one burns out in 3 months. Curious how many of you check the pan first or just go straight for the pump?
