Did you check the soil first with a probe rod before backing in? That part about hand digging after the fact works but you can save yourself the trouble by poking around the stump a day ahead. A long steel rod or even a piece of rebar jammed in the dirt every foot or so will hit roots before the wheel does. Also a lot of grinders have a slip clutch or you can run slower rpm on the first pass to feel it out.

Brokers lowball you on the quote and then jack it up on delivery day, that's the whole game. Your $200 savings can flip into a $400 surprise once they slap on a "stair fee" or "long carry" charge that the carrier never would've added. Direct carriers usually give you a firm price because they own the truck and the crew, no middleman trying to get his cut. That cheap broker quote is bait until you get the final bill in writing.
