I finally stopped ignoring the crack in my climbing tree crotch

Last summer I had a big white oak with a crack right in the main crotch. I kept thinking it could hold a few more seasons until a storm took half the canopy down last September. How do you decide when a split is bad enough to take the whole tree?

Isn't it funny how we always think trees can hold on just a little longer, until they prove us wrong in a storm? That's kind of how life goes, we ignore the warning signs until something forces us to pay attention.

Man the whole "ignoring warning signs" thing is a bit of a stretch honestly. Sometimes a split is just cosmetic and the tree keeps on trucking for decades if you know what youre looking at. I've seen plenty of oaks with cracks that never gave out, just depends on the angle and how deep it goes.
